Quilting Inspiration: Kristen MacDonald

At the Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting this month, we met Kristen MacDonald, a graphic design teacher with an abundant knowledge of color  theory.  She gave a 30 minute presentation about color theory for quilters that focused on abandoning the traditional color wheel in favor of a more 3-dimensional view of color.  Needless to say, she’s got a sharp eye.  Just look at that beauty to the left.  The quilt was one of about 50 entries to the Modern Quilt Guild’s first quilting challenge: to make a quilt based on the inspiration of your choice.  You can read more about the challenge here.  We’re excited to see what Kristen makes next, and we’re equally excited about the MQG’s Second Challenge: Monochromatic.  They’re giving away a huge box of Kona solids to three winners.  If you’re entering the challenge, what are you thinking about making?

Thank you for donating the nice gift certificates at guild – and thank you for what ever mojo you put on one of them so my name was drawn for one of them! I can’t wait to come visit your shop – I’ve been wanting to forever. Hope you don’t mind if I come with a sleeping bag and a toothbrush… I suspect I won’t be able to leave once I step foot in your beautiful shop!

I love Kristen color presentation and all that knowledge she shared. We have such an amazing guild!

  2. Thank you for supporting the Guild with your donations!
I am planning a quilt but all I have so far is the color green. It’s a little overwhelming but I am working on it.

Thanks, Petra! The Guild meeting was so much fun and we can’t wait for next month. We’re a little overwhelmed by the endless possibilities to the monochromatic challenge, too; I can’t even decide on a color…
