Portlander Susan Beal’s new book, Modern Log Cabin Quilting, comes out tomorrow, and we’re so excited for her that we’re dedicating the rest of the week to Log Cabin quilts. Look for plenty of upcoming posts on the book and the patchwork technique.
We tracked Susan down at the Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting last week and got her to sign our advance copy, which we’ll be giving away on April 1st. How do you enter the giveaway, you ask? By commenting on the cool cottons blog! Between now and March 31st, one comment per day per person will count as an official entry into the giveaway. That means you can enter the giveaway up to eleven times. We want to hear what you have to say about the blog, and we’re pleased as punch to give away such a lovely book, so get to commenting!
Beautiful book! I would love to get my hands on it!
Right you are on both counts! We’re a little heartbroken to give our copy away. Thanks for commenting, and good luck.
This book looks wonderful for new ideas to explore!
Love Portland and shopping at Cool Cottons. We come by whenever we get to Portland. Would be so wonderful to have Susan’s book.
See you this June!
Cool Cottons is the best fabric store ever! So fun to shop there!
Thanks, Ellie! You’re too sweet!
This looks like something else I want to learn how to make!
You can, Lesley! Log Cabin quilting is one of the most approachable forms of patchwork–all you need is a bit of free time and good instruction.
I am expecting a baby next winter and would love to make a quilt for his/her arrival. This seems like a really nice book to work with!
Congratulations, Morgan! Susan, the author, made an incredible Bright Furrows quilt for her newborn, Everett. The quilt pattern is featured in the book, and you can see pictures of it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/crafternews/5474690516/
Exciting giveaway! I’ve seen this book, and know I want it, thanks for the chance!
What fun! I believe I NEED this book!
Can’t wait to take a look at Susan’s book!
Susan is such a sweet heart and I totally fell in love with the Bright Furrows pattern after seeing her amazing gorgeous quilt at the PMQG meeting last month. I’d love to win a copy of this book, so I can justify buying some more fabric:)

I came via Susan’s blog. Thanks for the chance to win her book.
I’m pleased as punch to find out about the Cool Cottons blog… subscribed!
Also, I am real excited to see Susan’s new book, I signed up for a log cabin class last summer at PNCA, but it ended up getting canceled, I was so disappointed! I’m glad the book is almost here!

Lovely!
I’m loving that quilt on the cover! Yeah for giveaways!!!
I am a beginner to sewing, and Cool Cottons has given me the tools to create beautiful project. Great store, great staff…oh yeah and that book would be lovely to get as well. 🙂 Keep up all the hard work ladies!…i spread the word daily~
one more reason to make a trip to cool cottons! (as if I need a reason . . . besides chatting with Marie and Pam and petting fabric . . .)
OH I would love to have that book 🙂
This book looks fantastic. The quilt on the cover is visually satisfying.
I can’t wait to see the new book — spotted it on Amazon in recent months and have had my eye on it. The cover project looks terrific so I can’t wait to see what other projects are inside.
Hoooooooooray for Susan. Thank you to Cool Cottons for the reminder about the book and the giveaway.

I’ve been taking a quilting break and have been doing clothing but seeing that quilt makes me want to get back at it!
I love the new modern look! Wow, looks like a great must have book!

Logs cabins of any kind are my most favorite patterns and Cool Cottons is my favorite quilt store. I hope I win that book!
You guys rock! Thanks for the give-a-way!
I live across the country from COOL COTTONS,, but each time i am in Portland i visit for a look at the gorgeous fabrics, as well as the new patterns….i would LOVE to own this book, to make new quilts…..
I’m a Nebraskan. My daughter lives in Portland. Absolutely love your shop! We always find “a quilt, or curtains, etc.” from your shop when I visit. The cover of the book makes me want to start another project. Bet there are lots of other great projects in it! And I bet you could help me with the fabric!
Lovely, lovely book!
I’m loving this new modern quilt movement which is more color focused. This book looks like another goodie in that vein.
Can’t wait to get some fabrics and make one of the projects from the book!
From your review and the “sneak peak” photos you put up, this looks like a really fun book with some excellent projects. I have never thought of the log cabin block as contemporary, but it’s all about the fabrics!, Right?
Steve: It really is all about the fabric. Look for a post tomorrow on historical log cabin quilts, which are beautiful in their own right but very different from the modern versions.
Based on the wonderful quilt on the cover, I’m looking forward to the rest of the book. A new book for my collection!
Your shop has all of the perfect fabrics to make this beautiful quilt. I can’t wait to get started!
I am shopping for quilt books right now! I would love to add this to my crafting library.

The cover is very enticing. Can’t wait to see the inside.
I had the opportunity to meet Susan at the local guild meeting and run into her at a local business. She is a genuine person and the success of her book is going to reflect that!
Would love to win. Log Cabin quilts have always been my most favorite.
Oh my! Will Portland ever run short on talent? The book looks lovely… my mom and I have been searching for a quilt pattern to work on together (mother-daughter quilts!) and I bet we could find more than enough inspiration in this book!
I love shopping at Cool Cotton’s! They always seem to have something that I really need. The book would be perfect addition to my quilting needs.
Ooo ooo sign me up!
It looks like a cool book and it’s exciting to know that it’s from our own neighborhood.

Thanks
Log cabin patterns have always been my favorite! Looking forward to getting one of these books… Lanny:)
I love making log cabin quilts. I love the QfQ idea.
You all rock. Great fabrics and store. So much so, that even my husband likes to come in and look around. And what a clever way to get us all to comment on your blog! I have to admit that I get most of my crafty books from the library. That way I can buy more fabrics with the money I save. 😉
Yes, I would love a copy and the time to make a quilt!
What a gorgeous cover.
Kate
Wow, love the quilt on the cover. can’t wait to get my quilting paws on that book. Love coming to your store when we visit Portland. Please add me to your giveaway. And thanks for offering it.
Can’t wait to see that book!
Can’t wait to see modern takes on my favorite pattern!
I really like the cross quilt on the cover–but why make the background white? So many quilts go for the white background and I just imagine them covered in stains.
Goodbye Thimbleberries. Hello modern! Love this book – really really love it! Want it. Love the new take and it is inspiring – lots of new ways to make the scrappy type of quilts but look new and fresh.
Looks like a lovely book, I would love to win a copy!
I’ve been a long-time fan of the store but only recently found the blog. Log cabin quilts have always been a favorite of mine and I’d love to make my own someday.
