After paging through Modern Log Cabin Quilting for the past week, the first thing that we have to say is that the book is beautiful. Exceptional photography, and crisp graphic design deeply enhance the content of the book–and what wonderful content it is. Susan covers everything from the history of log cabin quilting, to the basics of cutting and piecing fabric so that even the greenest beginner can follow along. Patterns range from zipper bags and pillows to full-on duvet covers, which means you’ll turn to this book for help on everything from simple gifts to your very first (or your fifteenth) quilt. Log Cabin patchwork is one of the most approachable styles for a beginner because of quick and simple cutting and piecing.
It’s nice to see so many modern quilts derived from such a traditional quilt block. That historical connection to tradition gives meaning to the work of modern quilting, and the modern aesthetic of these finished projects means you’ll really want to display the finished product.
Modern Log Cabin Quilting was released today. Support Portlander Susan Beal by leaving your congratulations in the comments (and remember, every comment is an entry into our giveaway for a signed copy of MLCQ).
